Audition Requirements

Writing Sample

Submit a non-fiction writing sample, 500 words or more

Writing sample: preferably an assignment from a course in English, History, or a similar subject

Repertoire

Repertoire: prepare an audition program on your major instrument or voice as specified for your area (see the UNH audition requirements by instrument/voice)

Application Logistics

Apply to UNH through the Common Application

Fall 2027 audition dates: November 14, 2026 (suggested for Early Action applicants), January 23, 2027, January 30, 2027, February 20, 2027, or April 23, 2027 (not eligible for a music scholarship)

Program Requirements

All UNH music degrees have final approval from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)

A music audition identifies your qualifications; it does not by itself commit you to a music degree

Admitted students complete music theory and aural-skills placement for course placement only — not part of admission

What's The Process

Audition Process

Fall 2027 audition dates: November 14, 2026 (suggested for Early Action applicants), January 23, 2027, January 30, 2027, February 20, 2027, or April 23, 2027 (not eligible for a music scholarship)

Interview with one of the music liberal studies program faculty members

The audition on your major instrument is required in addition to the writing sample and interview

Audition Expectations

Auditions are held before a small panel of faculty members

All auditions are video recorded for the applied faculty member in your area to review

Applicants traveling from outside New England or the Tri-State area may contact music.info@unh.edu if the in-person requirement is an undue burden

Scholarship Info

Music Merit Scholarships

The music department audition also serves as the audition for a music merit scholarship

Awards are based largely on audition quality, plus the applicant’s instrument/voice type and departmental needs

Renewable for up to four academic years with an acceptable GPA

Recording Policy

All auditions are video recorded for review by the applied faculty member in your area

Students who opt out of recording are ineligible for a scholarship unless they schedule an in-person campus visit and sample lesson
