Prescreen Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Three (3) or more contrasting selections, ideally performed from memory, demonstrating the range of artistic ability

•Auditions may include performances on nylon, steel string, or electric guitar, including improvised melodic/chordal material (including with a backing track) or accompanying the applicant’s own voice

Scales & Technique

•Several open or movable position scales (two or three octaves)

•Ability to sight-read standard notation and lead sheets will also be evaluated

Application Logistics

•The School of Music application for 2026-27 is closed; prospective applicants may submit a late application request for the upcoming academic year

•Application fee: $95 for domestic applicants and $130 for international applicants

•Fee waivers are accepted through SAT, ACT, or NACAC request processes

•Submit the initial UNCSA application before uploading documents and recordings in the Admissions Portal

•Applying to a second UNCSA arts school requires a separate application and fee

Transfer Pathway

The School of Music may accept up to 50% of the BM degree from an accredited undergraduate program on a case-by-case basis after transcript evaluation and/or UNCSA placement assessments.

Audition Process

•The application recording is submitted with the application materials as a prescreen

•Applicants who qualify are invited to schedule a faculty audition

•Contact guitar professor Joseph Pecoraro at pecorj@uncsa.edu with questions about the audition process or requirements

Audition Expectations

•Auditions are primarily held in person on the UNCSA campus

•Applicants unable to travel may request a live virtual audition from their admissions counselor

•A Chicago audition opportunity may be available and is recorded for later faculty review

Scholarship Consideration

•Each UNCSA arts school may award institutional scholarships for artistic merit demonstrated through the audition

•Undergraduate applicants may also be considered for need-based scholarships by filing the FAFSA
