Training
•Led by Guy Capuzzo, Professor of Music Theory (PhD, Eastman School of Music) and author of "Elliott Carter's What Next?: Communication, Cooperation, and Separation" (University of Rochester Press, 2012).
•The 32-credit degree requires four theory seminars covering pedagogy, rhythm and meter, post-tonal analysis, and contemporary trends, plus an elective in counterpoint, Schenkerian analysis, or tonal analysis.
•Students compile a portfolio of written work drawn from at least three required theory courses, and choose a capstone track — thesis, document, or comprehensive exam — that must be presented in a public forum.
Degree Flexibility
•The three-track capstone (thesis, document, or comprehensive exam) lets students tailor the final project toward research writing, applied pedagogy, or exam-based assessment.
