•Private lessons with Mark Engebretson, Professor of Composition and Music Technology and head of the composition area — a Barlow Foundation commission recipient, Fulbright Fellow, and North Carolina Artist Fellow in Composition — alongside composition faculty Alejandro Rutty, whose works blend South American styles and have been performed by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestras of Argentina and Brazil.
•The 33-credit, two-year degree pairs Orchestration and a digital-music-composition course with Tonal Counterpoint, requiring at least half of all coursework at the 600 level or above.
•Capstone requirements include a required thesis, a written comprehensive exam, and at least one degree recital.
Professional Development
•Composition graduate assistants typically teach Composition Skills or Music with Computers and manage the School of Music's Electronic Music Studios alongside their own coursework.
