Training
•The minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours: the required foundation course Understanding Media, plus 15 credits chosen from more than 50 Media Studies electives, with at least a 2.0 GPA average in Media Studies coursework.
•Elective areas include media theory and criticism (Media Theory, Film Theory, Gender and Media Culture), history and analysis (Introduction to Film History, History of Digital Media, News Analysis), writing (Media Writing, Broadcast Newswriting, Writing for the Screen), and production skills (Sound, Lighting, Cinematography, Editing I & II) — letting a student in another major add targeted production or media-literacy coursework without the full major's 36-credit, 300-level-heavy load.
•Students can go further into specialized production areas — Virtual Production, Unreal Engine for Filmmaking, Documentary Production, Animation Production, and Gaming and Esports Production — or into professional tracks like Media Law and Ethics and Media Financing and Distribution.
Facilities
•Minor students train on the same equipment as majors: the Carmichael Radio and Television Center's soundstage, editing lab, screening room, and audio recording studio, and can join WUAG, UNCG's student-run campus radio station, through WUAG Workshop coursework.
