Training
•The Instrumental Emphasis is coordinated by José Rivera and includes Theory I–III, Conducting I–II, and Orchestration and Arranging alongside content-pedagogy methods courses
•Majors complete a full-semester internship (student teaching) that leads to a Standard Professional I North Carolina teaching license; the program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP)
Performance & Productions
•Instrumental auditions are area-specific: winds with Dr. Tim Altman, bowed strings with Dr. Holland Phillips, guitar with Dr. Aaron Vandermeer, and percussion (snare drum, mallets, timpani) with department chair Dr. Joseph Van Hassel
•Instrumental majors perform in University Orchestra, University Band, or Spirit of the Carolinas, UNCP's marching band, as their major ensemble
Facilities
•Moore Hall houses instrumental faculty studios and a rehearsal hall with a Baldwin grand piano; ensembles also perform at the 1,600-seat Givens Performing Arts Center
