Training
•The General track spans Brass, Keyboard, Low Brass, Music History & Literature, Percussion, Strings, Theory and Composition, Voice, and Woodwinds, with weekly one-on-one lessons in the student's chosen area
•A four-semester theory sequence moves from fundamentals through chromatic harmony into 20th-century techniques, paired with aural-skills coursework
Performance & Productions
•Faculty studios include Dr. Tim Altman (brass/woodwinds), Dr. Mark Tollefsen (keyboard), Dr. Joseph Van Hassel (percussion, department chair), Dr. Holland Phillips (strings), and Dr. Jaeyoon Kim and Dr. Piper Pack-Smith (voice)
•Students perform in ensembles including University Orchestra, University Band, and Pembroke Singers
Notable Alumni
•Jaylen Jones — tenor saxophonist mentored by Dr. Aaron Vandermeer; composed more than 40 original works as a member of Jazz Combo I before continuing at the University of North Texas's jazz graduate program
Facilities
•Moore Hall houses faculty studios, Steinway and Boston grand pianos, and the UNCP Project Studio recording facility; the 1,600-seat Givens Performing Arts Center hosts large ensemble concerts
