Audition Requirements

Songs

Lower-Division Voice

For students with fewer than four semesters of college-level lessons

Sing, from memory, two songs of contrasting mood and tempo — either both from the solo classical repertoire (art song, opera, oratorio) or one classical and one musical theatre selection

Pieces must be solo voice and piano arrangements, performed in their entirety with accompaniment

Holding a score is permissible for an oratorio aria; include French, German, and/or Italian selections if you are experienced singing in those languages

Upper-Division Voice

For students with four or more semesters of college-level lessons

Prepare at least six memorized classical selections in at least three languages (Italian, English, and German required)

Selections may include opera and oratorio arias, Lieder, English/American art songs, or comparable classical repertoire

Memorization and the use of a pianist are required

Additional Materials

Sheet Music

Provide your collaborative pianist with a legible piano accompaniment score in the appropriate key before or at your in-person audition

Transfer Pathway

For BM Music, UNC Charlotte publishes a 2025-2026 Music BA/BM transfer guide covering NCCC AFA Music coursework and the BM concentration requirements remaining after transfer. The Department of Music also describes AFA Music transfer timelines for BM Music Education and BM performance concentrations, with performance placement depending on the entrance audition and advanced applied-study review.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Request an audition through the Future 49er Portal at least one week before the in-person date

Select a time for the vocal instrument area

Live audition preferred; recorded video auditions accepted on a rolling basis

Results are delivered within 10 business days through the Future 49er Portal

Audition Expectations

A collaborative pianist is provided for in-person voice auditions when requested during reservation

Provide a legible accompaniment score in the appropriate key
