Audition Process
•Bullet: University admission happens through the UM application, and the School of Theatre and Dance Apply page says "We do not require an audition for admission."
•Bullet: The Becoming a Dance Major page says students must complete a formal audition to apply for admission to the Dance program, while the UM Dance Days page lists the entrance/scholarship audition for incoming dance majors as optional; questions can go to umtheatredance@umontana.edu
•Bullet: Prospective and transfer students are encouraged to audition at UM Dance Days
•Bullet: Students unable to attend the live audition may request remote audition consideration from the Dance Program Head
•Bullet: UM Dance Days 2027 is posted for April 16-17, 2027 (the Becoming a Dance Major page still says the first week of February); the detailed schedule will be updated by UM in early 2027
Audition Expectations
•Bullet: In-person audition includes a faculty-led warm-up, phrase work in ballet, contemporary modern, and jazz
•Bullet: Audition concludes with a 1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography; all genres welcome
•Bullet: Virtual audition requires a video link to a 1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography
Post-Enrollment
•Bullet: Catalog states prospective majors must pass an admission audition during the first year to continue in the program
•Bullet: Current UM students interested in declaring Dance are advised to attend the audition during their first year
