Post-Enrollment Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

No audition is required for the initial application. The optional scholarship review (audition and portfolio) is separate from the internal audition gate students complete after enrollment.Gateway source

Dance

In-Person Dance Audition

Faculty-led warm-up class

Phrase work in ballet, contemporary modern, and jazz

1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography; all genres welcome

Virtual Dance Audition

Request remote audition consideration from the Dance Program Head

Submit a video link to a 1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography

Video should showcase your strengths as a dancer and dance maker

Describe your dance background and why you hope to be considered for a degree in dance at UM

Transcript

Transfer students must submit a current transcript from the transferring institution

Scholarship consideration may also request an unofficial transcript from your current high school or college

Eligibility

Transfer students audition through the same Dance major process as first-year applicants

Transfer students must submit a current transcript from the transferring institution with the audition package

Admission Pathway

Acceptance into the Dance major is contingent on admission to the University of Montana

Students who cannot attend the in-person audition may request a virtual audition

Important Notes

UM Dance Days registration has a participation cost; Friday only is $100 and Friday/Saturday is $120

Registration-fee waivers are available by email, and remote audition consideration is available by request

What's The Process

Audition Process

University admission happens through the UM application, but Dance major admission requires a formal audition

Prospective and transfer students are encouraged to audition at UM Dance Days

Students unable to attend the live audition may request remote audition consideration from the Dance Program Head

UM Dance Days 2027 is posted for April 16-17, 2027; the detailed schedule will be updated by UM in early 2027

Audition Expectations

In-person audition includes a faculty-led warm-up, phrase work in ballet, contemporary modern, and jazz

Audition concludes with a 1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography; all genres welcome

Virtual audition requires a video link to a 1.5-2 minute solo of your own choreography

Post-Enrollment

Catalog states prospective majors must pass an admission audition during the first year to continue in the program

Current UM students interested in declaring Dance are advised to attend the audition during their first year
