Program Recognition
•BM Musicology is an undergraduate music degree pathway in the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.
•SMTD publishes this exact degree or applied-area option in its current undergraduate catalog and admission requirements.
Training
•The curriculum combines university study with conservatory-level studio, musicianship, ensemble, and performance work.
•All applicants should submit two or three examples of English academic writing in the Artistic Profile. The topic may be music or any other area of interest.
Performance & Productions
•The Bachelor of Music in Musicology also requires a recorded principal audition. Please refer to the audition requirements for your principal instrument or voice. If your program does not have any specific performance repertoire listed in the audition/interview requirements section, then you will need to refer to your program’s pre-screening guidelines for submission. If your principal instrument concentration is with a Jazz style, then you will need to refer to the Jazz department pre-screening requirements. Principal audition recordings must be submitted by December 1.
•Applicants who advance are evaluated by SMTD faculty through the format and repertoire rules published for Musicology.
Degree Flexibility
•Students apply through the Common Application and complete an SMTD Artistic Profile for the selected degree and area.
•The December 1 Artistic Profile deadline applies to first-year undergraduate SMTD applicants for Fall 2027.
