Prescreen Requirements

Dance

Prescreen Videos

One solo, one minute, in the dance style of your choice

Learn and record two of the five combination excerpts provided by the Department of Dance

Record a speaking video answering all three published questions; each response may be up to one minute

Video Preparation

Wear clothing that shows clean lines

Keep your entire body in view

Submit individual original video files

Do not submit multi-camera studio videos or YouTube, Google Drive, or other hosted links

Resume

One page covering dance, music, and theatre training and experience

Dance applicants should include styles studied, teachers or studios, intensive programs, roles or company work, honors, and related choreography, teaching, gymnastics, or service experience

Photograph

Explain how your background and life experiences, opportunities, or challenges motivated your decision to pursue dance at Michigan

Letters of Recommendation

SMTD does not participate in Early Action or Early Decision

All live auditions are by invitation after faculty review of the Artistic Profile and prescreen videos

SMTD Artistic Profile: $45; qualifying applicants may request a waiver before paying

What's The Process

Audition Process

Faculty review the Artistic Profile, videos, résumé, photograph, and personal statement

Successful applicants are invited to a live in-person or online audition/interview

Audition Expectations

In person: participate in two dance classes, perform a one-minute solo, and have a short conversation about your background and goals

Online: participate in online dance class or classes, review and discuss your submitted solo, and have a short conversation about your background and goals

Invited applicants also attend a group meeting with faculty and current students about curriculum and performance opportunities
