•If singing, prepare up to 32 bars

•May sing a cappella or with accompaniment

Monologues

Capa Scholarship Monologue Option

•Prepare one contemporary play monologue, 1.5 minutes maximum

•Choose material within your age and range

•Material must come from a play, not a film script, novel, monologue book, or original work

Capa Design/Tech Presentation Option

•For applicants choosing the design or technical area

•Prepare a design or technical project presentation, 4 minutes maximum

•May include drawings, renderings, floor plans, models, photos, boards, or similar project documentation

•Discuss design/production experience, research, resources, concepts, limitations, construction challenges, and final results

Enrollment

•Not a limited enrollment major — any UMD student may declare theatre as a major or double major

•Entry-level theatre courses require the student to be a declared major, so declaring before pre-registration begins is advisable

•Mandatory advising session each semester required to lift advising blocks

What's The Process

Audition Process

•No audition, portfolio presentation, or interview required to declare the theatre major

•CAPA scholarship audition is optional for scholarship consideration and does not guarantee UMD admission

•CAPA auditions for the 2026/2027 academic year are Friday, December 19, 2025 at 11:00 a.m.; only one audition day is offered

Audition Expectations

•Applicants choose one audition area for CAPA purposes

•Performance applicants prepare monologue material; singing may be added only if it is a strength

•Design/technical applicants prepare a design or technical project presentation

Post-Enrollment

•Auditions/interviews are required for theatre performance classes, upper-level dance technique classes, and Main Stage productions

Scholarship Info

Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships (Capa)

•Equivalent to full in-state tuition and mandatory fees

•Awarded to outstanding undergraduate theatre majors for academic excellence and exceptional performance or design/production skills

•Renewable for up to 8 semesters

•Minimum 3.50 high school GPA recommended (3.0 for transfers)

•CAPA Scholarship Application deadline: December 12

•Audition held in December for the following academic year

Tdps Scholarship Award Funds

•Additional merit-based scholarships and educational opportunities for current theatre and dance majors when financial circumstances allow
