Post-Enrollment Interview Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

No interview is required for the initial application. The optional scholarship review (audition) is separate from the internal interview gate students complete after enrollment.Gateway source

Modern dance technique class

Improvisation

Solo performance of a dance or excerpt in any style, 2 minutes maximum

Applicants must attend the entire audition day

Judging committee consists of dance faculty

Good to Know

Enrollment

Dance is not a limited enrollment major; any UMD student may declare it as a major or double major

Incoming students seeking CAPA consideration must apply to UMD by the Early Action deadline and identify dance as their intended primary major

Emphasis Selection

Performance and Choreography students complete 12 upper-level emphasis credits and are expected to remain active in technique and performance opportunities

Important Notes

Fall 2027 CAPA dates have not yet been published; the department page still displays the prior Fall 2026 cycle

Transfer Pathway

Eligible Maryland community-college students can use MTAP's guaranteed UMD transfer route before declaring the BA Dance Performance and Choreography emphasis. Dance advising reviews prior credits, builds the graduation plan, and assigns the required midpoint assessment.

What's The Process

Audition Process

No audition, portfolio presentation, or interview is required to declare the dance major

The CAPA scholarship audition is optional for scholarship consideration and does not determine UMD admission

TDPS has not yet published Fall 2027 CAPA application or audition dates; the current department page still lists the prior Fall 2026 cycle

Audition Expectations

Scholarship applicants attend the full in-person audition day

The audition includes modern technique, improvisation, and a solo in any style

No make-up day is offered unless TDPS cancels for inclement weather

Post-Enrollment

All dance majors complete a midpoint portfolio and scheduled faculty assessment in their assigned semester

The portfolio includes a resume, writing samples, and video examples from technique and choreography classes

Students who do not complete the assessment may not continue in the major

Scholarship Info

Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships (Capa)

Equivalent to full in-state tuition and mandatory fees

Awarded to gifted incoming first-year and transfer dance majors

Renewable for up to eight semesters with a 3.0 cumulative GPA requirement

Recipients maintain significant involvement in TDPS productions each semester

Fall 2027 application and audition dates have not yet been published
