BFA and Linehan Acting Audition Requirements

One monologue, 45-90 seconds

Must be from a published work (play, film, novel, or other published text)

Choose material that feels authentic to you and that you're excited to perform

Application Logistics

Must be accepted to UMBC by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions

Audition process can begin as long as a university application is on file

Eligibility

Current UMBC students changing majors must audition before or during their first year

Email theatre@umbc.edu before changing majors for a smooth transition

All BFA Acting majors must maintain a C or above in all studio courses

Transfer Pathway

UMBC publishes a selective Accelerated BFA in Acting path for transfer students with prior college acting training. Transfer applicants must audition before enrolling and may be placed into upper-level studio acting courses; depending on prior coursework, the degree may take four or five semesters.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Begin or submit the UMBC undergraduate application before scheduling the department audition

Admission to the BFA in Acting is by live audition and faculty interview

Pre-recorded audition videos are not accepted

Fall 2026 entry: in-person audition Sunday, August 16, 2026 at 10:00 AM

Spring 2027 entry: live virtual audition Saturday, November 21, 2026 at 10:00 AM; this option is intended for spring transfer applicants who cannot attend in January

Spring or Fall 2027 entry, including Linehan applicants: in-person audition Saturday, January 16, 2027 at 10:00 AM

A separate Fall 2027 in-person audition is planned for August 2027; exact date and sign-up are TBA

Linehan acting applicants are evaluated for BFA admission during the Linehan audition and do not need a separate Theatre audition

Audition Expectations

Prepare one contemporary monologue lasting 60–90 seconds

A brief faculty interview follows the audition

The Fall 2027 Linehan acting audition is Saturday, January 16, 2027 at 10:00 AM; snow date is January 30, 2027

Linehan acting applicants are automatically evaluated for BFA Acting admission and do not need a separate Theatre audition
