Repertoire List

•Prepare audition repertoire for your primary instrument using UMBC's instrument-specific audition requirements page

•Piano: two memorized contrasting pieces plus all major/minor scales and arpeggios

•Strings and classical guitar: two contrasting pieces or movements

•For violin scholarship consideration, prepare at least one concerto movement and one movement of an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita

•For viola scholarship consideration, both audition movements should be memorized

•For cello scholarship consideration, prepare at least one concerto movement and one movement of an unaccompanied Bach sonata

•Woodwinds, brass, and percussion: instrument-specific repertoire, scales/technique, and sight-reading

•Jazz instrumentalists: two prepared pieces, scales/arpeggios, and sight-reading; Jazz Performance applicants must include improvisation

Application Portal

•Submit the UMBC Music audition application through the department form

•There is no cost to complete the Music audition application

•Have application files ready before starting the form, including artistic resume and any track-specific uploads

•University application via Common App

Admission Pathway

•Admission to UMBC does not guarantee acceptance as a music major

•A successful music audition does not guarantee admission to the university

•Both the university application and departmental audition must be completed independently

What's The Process

Audition Process

•All applicants interested in majoring in music must audition for the music faculty on their primary instrument

•On-campus auditions last 10-15 minutes and are conducted privately with a panel of music faculty

•Results are mailed within 14 days of the audition

•Applicants interested in early UMBC acceptance, Linehan, or other talent-based scholarships should audition in November or January when dates are posted

Timing

•Audition applications are due two weeks before the selected audition date

•The Music application page currently still lists the prior audition cycle; future audition dates should be rechecked when posted

Scholarship Info

Departmental Scholarships

•Merit scholarships are available for music majors who show talent and promise

•Incoming freshmen and transfer students audition and are selected by the music faculty

•Department awards offer up to $2,500 per year toward tuition

Linehan Artist Scholars Program

•Four-year scholarship for incoming freshmen only

•Music applicants seeking Linehan or other talent-based scholarships should audition in November or January when dates are posted

•Linehan awards range from $5,000 to $15,000 per year for in-state students and $10,000 to $22,000 per year for out-of-state students
