Dance

Solo Performance (Up to 2 Minutes)

Any genre of dance

Self-choreographed or created by someone else with their permission

Music can be played from your phone/device

Shoes, socks, or bare feet — your choice based on floor feel

Class Placement

Prospective students attend a technique class as part of audition day

Class is used for placement into appropriate technique level

Attire

Form-fitting clothing, no bare midriff

Soft ballet shoes, socks, and bare feet

Bring a form-fitting long-sleeved top for possible floorwork

Application Logistics

Apply to UMBC first and select Dance as your major on the university application

The Fall 2027 audition date (Saturday, January 9, 2027) is now posted; the online registration form was not yet live as of this review — check the department audition page for the link

No audition fees

Program Requirements

Dance majors must pass DANC 320 Intermediate Contemporary Dance Technique II with a B or better to continue in the major

This is an academic gateway course, not an admission audition requirement

Students with extensive dance backgrounds may enter at a higher technique level and may be placed on the Accelerated Pathway to the BA.

Dance Education certification is available through additional Dance and Education coursework; UMBC does not offer a separate Dance Education degree

Transfer Pathway

UMBC states students entering the BA Dance with a high level of training may be placed on the Accelerated Pathway to the BA; incoming transfer dance majors also use the class-placement/scholarship audition. Students should confirm placement and remaining technique prerequisites with Dance advising.

Audition is for Fine Arts Dance Award scholarships and class placement only; it is not required for program admission

Class Placement and Scholarship Audition for incoming freshmen and transfer dance majors entering Fall 2027 is in person on Saturday, January 9, 2027 at 10:00 AM

All auditioners are automatically considered for a Fine Arts Dance Award

Open to incoming freshmen and transfer students

No audition fees

Audition Expectations

Prospective students attend a technique class, perform a solo (no longer than 2 minutes), and answer faculty questions about dance background, career goals, and inspiration

Solo may be in any genre and may be self-choreographed or created by someone else with permission

Music can be played from your phone or device

Recommended attire: form-fitting clothing, no bare midriff, soft ballet shoes, socks, or bare feet, plus a form-fitting long-sleeved top for possible floorwork

Scholarship Info

Fine Arts Dance Award

All auditioners are automatically considered

Open to incoming freshmen and transfer students

Awards may be up to $2,500 per year; incoming transfer students may receive the award for up to two years

Linehan Artist Scholars Program

Four-year arts scholarship for incoming freshmen only

Must apply separately through the UMBC Scholarship Office

Linehan applicants participate through the department audition/portfolio process
