Dance

SOLO PERFORMANCE (up to 2 minutes)

Any genre of dance
Self-choreographed or created by someone else with their permission
Music can be played from your phone/device
Shoes, socks, or bare feet — your choice based on floor feel

CLASS PLACEMENT

Prospective students attend a technique class as part of audition day
Class is used for placement into appropriate technique level

ATTIRE

Form-fitting clothing, no bare midriff
Soft ballet shoes, socks, and bare feet
Bring a form-fitting long-sleeved top for possible floorwork

APPLICATION PROCESS

Apply to UMBC first — must be accepted to the university before audition
Select Dance as your major on the Common App
Register for the audition via Google Form — no fees

GATEWAY REQUIREMENT

Declaring Dance as a major requires passing DANC 320 (Intermediate Contemporary Dance Technique II) with a B or better
This is an academic gateway, not an audition requirement
Students placed at appropriate technique level based on audition

K-12 CERTIFICATION

Dance Education certification available — requires additional courses from Dance and Education departments
Graduates receive BA in Dance with Maryland State Dance teaching certification

What's The Process

AUDITION FORMAT

In-person audition on UMBC campus
Consists of a technique class, solo performance, and interview
Immediately after the solo, faculty will ask about dance background, career goals, and inspiration
No audition fees

SCHOLARSHIP AUDITION

Audition is for Fine Arts Dance Award scholarships and class placement only — not required for program admission
All auditioners automatically considered for a Fine Arts Dance Award
Open to incoming freshmen and transfer students

GATEWAY COURSE

Dance majors must pass Intermediate Contemporary Dance Technique II (DANC 320) with a B or better
Students with extensive dance backgrounds may complete this during first year
Students with less experience complete preparatory courses first
