Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Two contrasting works — one that demonstrates expressive musicality and a second that displays technique

Low brass players (tenor trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba) prepare material showing lyrical and technical ability, often two contrasting etudes or a standard solo

Orchestral excerpts may be substituted as appropriate for low brass

Scales & Technique

Prospective instrumental students may be asked to sight-read and/or perform scales during the audition

Apply and audition by February 1 for full consideration

Both online and in-person auditions accepted

Apply via Common App or UMaine direct application

Pass the music entry audition before the university reviews admission to the major

Admission Pathway

Admitted students complete a piano proficiency requirement (satisfied by exam or the piano class series) - for course placement, not admission

Program Requirements

A "C-" or better required in all music courses

Students receiving below "C-" in applied lessons are dropped from the program and must re-audition

What's The Process

Audition Process

All students wishing to major in music must pass an entry audition on their major instrument before the music faculty

Both online and in-person auditions accepted

Audition Expectations

Piano accompanist provided for live auditions

Dress professionally and stand fully in the camera frame

Announce each piece — smartphone video is acceptable

Scholarship Info

Visual & Performing Arts Scholarship ($3,000/Year)

Renewable for up to 8 semesters for first-year students and 4 semesters for transfer students

Must submit complete university application by December 1

Awarded based on demonstrated talent in music
