Portfolio

Optional alternative to the performance audition - submit a portfolio instead of auditioning

Submit a digital portfolio with view access for anyone with the link

Acceptable portfolio items: audio/video recordings, engineered recordings, original sheet music, or marketing and promotion samples (campaign materials, websites, managed social accounts)

Portfolio description: for each item, include your role, software/equipment used, and others involved

Statement

Written statement of musical interests and career goals, 500-750 words

Application Logistics

Complete the UIndy application before scheduling your audition day

Schedule through the Music Audition Portal using the same login credentials

Sign-up deadline is two weeks before each audition date

Track

Music Business track — management, finance, marketing, intellectual property law, and entrepreneurship, with project-focused learning and community partnerships

Portfolio Option

Portfolios are submitted digitally with view access for anyone with the link

Marketing/promotion samples (campaign materials, websites, managed social accounts) are welcome for business-track applicants

Scholarship

Scholarship consideration requires declaring a primary instrument while enrolled in the program

Placement

Admitted students take a required music theory placement exam at the audition-day theory exam — for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

Choose one application option: a performance audition or a digital portfolio submission

Performance Audition Option

Declare a primary instrument or voice part and perform a Classical, Jazz, or Contemporary/Popular music audition

Classical: two contrasting works or etudes — one technical, one expressive/lyrical

Jazz: a prepared selection, all major scales plus the B-flat or F blues scale, blues improvisation, and instrument-specific sight-reading

Contemporary/Popular: two works (original or by another writer); solo, self-accompanied, or with a pre-recorded backing track

Interview (Required for Both Options)

Interview with music faculty about your goals and experience in the music industry

Brief music theory placement evaluation

Attendance at a scheduled audition day (full-day event, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET)

Decisions

Results emailed within one to two weeks after audition

Competitive scholarships awarded based on entrance audition performance

Only music majors are eligible for departmental scholarships

Must audition before the priority deadline (February 19, 2027) for scholarship consideration
