Audition Requirements

Repertoire - Instrumentalists (Excluding Drum Set)

•Prepare one selection you have been working on or performed - a tune, a transcribed solo, or a jazz ensemble chart part

•Repertoire improvisation: improvise on a Bb or F blues of your choice

Scales & Technique - Instrumentalists

•All major scales and the Bb or F blues scale

•Sight-read a jazz etude specific to your instrument

Repertoire - Drum Set

•Prepare one selection you have been working on or performed - a tune, a transcribed solo, or a jazz ensemble chart part

•Repertoire style demonstration: play swing with sticks and brushes, bossa, and funk/rock styles

•Include the swing groove and a solo on a Bb or F blues of your choice

Scales & Technique - Drum Set

•Sight-read a big band drum set part

Application Logistics

•Complete the UIndy application before scheduling your audition

•Schedule your audition through the Music Audition Portal using the same login credentials

•Sign-up deadline is two weeks before each audition date

Preparation

•Applicants are strongly encouraged to prepare under the guidance of a private instructor

•Questions about the jazz audition can be directed to the Director of Jazz Studies, Dr. Mark O'Connor

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and ear-training placement exam at the audition-day theory exam — for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

•Jazz audition accompanied by a play-along track or a live rhythm section when available

•Interview with Music Department faculty

•Brief music theory and ear-training placement evaluation

•Full-day event from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET (lunch provided)

Decisions

•Results emailed within one to two weeks after audition

Scholarship Info

Music Scholarships

•Competitive scholarships awarded based on entrance audition performance

•Only music majors are eligible for departmental scholarships

•Must audition before the priority deadline (February 19, 2027) for scholarship consideration

•Ensemble grants available to non-major students who contribute to vocal or instrumental ensembles
