Audition Requirements

Repertoire

•Prepare at least two examples from the standard repertoire for your instrument (solos or concerti preferred)

•One selection to demonstrate technical proficiency and one to highlight expressive, lyrical playing

•Two movements from the same piece are acceptable, though two different works are preferred

•Contact the Applied Instructor for your instrument if you need repertoire suggestions

Scales & Technique

•Selected major scales (prepare all twelve)

•The chromatic scale over the range of your instrument

•Sight-reading

Application Logistics

•Complete the UIndy application before scheduling your audition

•Schedule your audition through the Music Audition Portal using the same login credentials

•Sign-up deadline is two weeks before each audition date

Eligibility

•Audition required for all music majors

•Fall enrollment — multiple audition dates available throughout the year

Placement

•Admitted students take a music theory and ear-training placement exam at the audition-day theory exam — for course placement only, not admission

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

•Performance of prepared brass repertoire

•Sight-reading and scale proficiency

•Interview with Music Department faculty

•Theory and ear-training placement evaluations

•Full-day event from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET (lunch provided)

•Audition time assigned at morning check-in

•Remote auditions are not available for Indiana residents — out-of-state and international students may email music@uindy.edu for remote options

•School-provided accompanist available at no cost — request when scheduling

•You may also bring your own accompanist

Decisions

•Results emailed within one to two weeks after audition

Scholarship Info

Music Scholarships

•Competitive scholarships awarded based on entrance audition performance

•Only music majors are eligible for departmental scholarships

•Must audition before the priority deadline (February 19, 2027) for scholarship consideration

•Ensemble grants available to non-major students who contribute to vocal or instrumental ensembles
