Application Logistics

Apply to UH Mānoa university admission first

Submit the separate Music Department application through Mākālei

Music Department acceptance cannot be considered until the university application is submitted

Music Department fall applications are due April 15; scholarship consideration is due February 1

Spring music applications are due September 15

Eligibility

UH Mānoa admits transfer applicants with 24 or more transferable credits; professional programs may require additional department prerequisites

Internal Review

BM Composition has a later internal acceptance step after enrollment as a music major; this is separate from the incoming Music Department audition

What's The Process

Audition Process

Students request formal acceptance into BM Composition, usually at the end of sophomore year as a music major

Internal composition review includes a letter to composition faculty and a portfolio of at least seven original works

Audition Expectations

All music majors audition for the music faculty

Live audition is preferred; high-quality unedited recordings are accepted for students unable to come to Honolulu

Recordings are submitted through Mākālei as MP3 files or online portfolio links

Recording Guidelines

Announce your name, intended major, and the pieces you will perform

Identify each composition by title and composer

Piano accompaniment is preferred unless the work is intended to be unaccompanied

Scholarship Info

Automatic Consideration

All music majors are automatically considered for Music Department scholarships

Decisions are announced at the end-of-year Closing Convocation and awards are paid across fall and spring semesters

Area-Specific Awards

Music Department awards include area-specific scholarships for voice, piano, composition, strings, percussion, gamelan, Hawaiian music, and music education
