Training
•Bullet: All music majors complete "a four-semester sequence of both written theory and aural skills"; Music Theory majors go further with "a rigorous program that prepares them to go on to graduate study in the field," including counterpoint, orchestration, analysis and keyboard harmony.
•Bullet: The audition piano requirement is shared with Music History and Literature and Composition majors: an original Bach work, a Mozart or Beethoven sonata movement, and a Romantic/Impressionistic/Contemporary piece performed from memory, with sight-reading.
Performance & Productions
•Bullet: Music Theory majors "work closely with the theory faculty" and are "encouraged to attend and present at regional and national conferences," and may "write an extended research paper on a related topic chosen in consultation with their adviser."
•Bullet: All music applicants take a Music Theory Placement Exam (MTPE) during Audition Days — described by the school as a "brief diagnostic assessment" that is "not an admissions requirement" but helps design first-year theory coursework.
