Audition Process
•Bullet: Open only to registered UCSC students — not available to prospective applicants
•Bullet: Declaring the BM major also requires passing MUSC 30A with a grade of C or better
•Bullet: Applied-instructor approval required to sign up for the audition
•Bullet: Held on campus each November/December
•Bullet: Students must audition prior to their senior year
•Bullet: Sophomores and juniors must demonstrate an advanced level at the first audition
•Bullet: Spring audition available only to junior transfer students
•Bullet: Once accepted, students complete juries each fall and spring quarter
•Bullet: Students who do not maintain an advanced level may be dismissed to the BA program
Audition Expectations
•Bullet: Prospective students may submit a recording to music@ucsc.edu for an informal evaluation before enrolling
•Bullet: Music majors interested in the BM degree typically have 5+ years of private instruction in classical technique and repertoire upon entering the University
•Bullet: After being accepted into UCSC, students individually email the faculty instructor of their instrument to discuss or arrange an audition to determine if they are at level on their instrument for the program
Post-Enrollment
•Bullet: Scholarship Audition for Continuing Students: competitions are held each May, and a student must be nominated by their teacher to compete
◦Sub-bullet: First-year, transfer, and re-entering students audition at the end of fall quarter at the time of juries
◦Sub-bullet: Prepare three pieces or movements of a contrasting nature from at least two different stylistic periods (two contrasting movements from the same sonata or concerto may count as two of the three); auditions last approximately 10 minutes
◦Sub-bullet: Scholarships are awarded on the basis of performance at these auditions, not on overall talent, potential, or financial need
◦Sub-bullet: If a piece is written with accompaniment, students must use an accompanist; students who do not are disqualified
