Program Recognition
•Music and Culture is UCR's scholarly and critical counterpart to the BA in Music, approaching music as culture through historical, ethnographic, and interpretive research rather than conservatory-style performance training
•No audition or portfolio is required to declare the major; performance courses are integrated into the curriculum as a means of exploring relationships between music and other forms of performance rather than as a standalone track
Facilities
•The department is chaired by ethnomusicologist Jonathan Ritter and is home to the Center for Iberian and Latin American Music (CILAM), directed by Professor Walter Aaron Clark, which sponsors the Otto Mayer-Serra Award and publishes the journal Diagonal — resources directly aligned with Music and Culture's research focus
•The weekly Florence Bayz Music Series brings faculty and visiting-scholar research talks to ARTS 157 each Wednesday at noon, open to all Music and Culture students
