Dance

Audition Components

•Ballet technique

•Modern/Contemporary technique

•Jazz technique

•Hip Hop technique

•Participants must be present ALL DAY — no breaks between techniques

•Live in-person audition required (no virtual option)

Attire — Ballet

•Solid-colored leotard and tights, or unitard

•Tights must be full length (no shorts or skirts)

•Shoes: Ballet slippers

Attire — Modern/Contemporary

•Fitted dance clothes

•Shoes: Barefoot or socks

Attire — Jazz

•Fitted dance clothes

•Shoes: Soft-soled jazz shoes or sneakers

Attire — Hip Hop

•Free choice of typical hip-hop attire (no labels, pictures, or slogans)

Prerequisite Technique Level

•First-year students must be at technique level II in at least one of ballet, modern/contemporary, or jazz

•Apply online to the University of California by December 2 as a UCI Dance major

Transfer Pathway

UCI lists Dance BA/BFA as transfer-admit majors with a required late-January audition before fall entry. Transfer applicants should complete lower-division dance preparation before transfer and will take placement auditions after admission.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Live in-person audition required for entry to the Dance major

•Two audition date options — applicants choose ONE

•Registration link emailed after submitting UC application as a UCI Dance major

•Must register for one audition date by January 1

•Check spam folder if invitation not received by December 10

Audition Expectations

•Participants expected to be available ALL DAY (no exceptions or accommodations)

•Must participate in all portions of the audition to be considered

•Breaks staggered throughout the day — dancers cannot change between techniques

•Bring own snacks, food, and water

•Hair must not distract from or impede visible movement

Placement Auditions

•Held during Welcome Week for admitted students

•Determine technique levels for course placement in ballet, modern/contemporary, jazz, and hip hop
