Audition Requirements
Songs
TWO CLASSICAL SOLO SONGS
•One in English and one in a foreign language (Italian, French, or German preferred)
•Memorization required, except for selections from the oratorio repertoire
•Voice faculty provide a repertoire guide for students who need assistance finding appropriate selections
Additional Materials
LIVE AUDITION
•Bring sheet music in a notebook or binder for the accompanist — no loose pages
•Accompanist provided by the school
RECORDED AUDITION
•Use iPhone, smartphone, or similar device to create video
•Place microphone 4-8 feet from the singer for optimal audio quality
•Stay centered in frame, visible from waist up
•At the start of each video, state your name, the title and composer of the selection, and the program you are applying to
•Accompaniment (live or pre-recorded) preferred but not required — a cappella is acceptable
•When performing without accompaniment, it is acceptable to skip over sections during which the voice is silent
•Upload to YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive, or similar — do not set videos as private

APPLICATION PROCESS
•Two-step: apply to UO (Common App or UO website) AND complete the separate SOMD online application
•Both applications due by January 15, 2026
•Recorded auditions due by January 23, 2026
ELIGIBILITY
•Fall enrollment only for incoming students
•Audition also qualifies applicants for SOMD performance scholarships
TRANSFER APPLICANTS
•Must complete both UO and SOMD applications by January 15 (not the general Feb 15 transfer deadline)
•Late applications risk non-admission and are generally not considered for scholarships
What's The Process
AUDITION FORMAT
•In-person auditions strongly encouraged — opportunity to see campus and connect with faculty
•Recorded auditions accepted if in-person is not possible
•Choose audition type (in-person or recorded) on SOMD application
•Auditions are 10-15 minutes in duration
ACCOMPANIMENT
•Accompanist provided for live voice auditions
TIMELINE
•Mid-March: SOMD issues admission decisions
•Approximately April 1: Scholarship offers mailed
•May 1: Enrollment deposit deadline and SOMD Admission Response form due
