Audition Process
•You may also perform a solo transcription or jazz etude (no longer than 1 minute)
•Lead trumpet players may perform a prepared excerpt from a big band chart
•Composers/arrangers may upload one or two writing samples with the application
Audition Expectations
•In-person auditions strongly encouraged — opportunity to see campus and connect with faculty
•Recorded auditions (audio or video) accepted for admission and scholarship if in-person is not possible
•Choose audition type (in-person or recorded) on the SOMD application
•Accompaniment is provided for all in-person jazz auditions
•Bring your instrument and three copies of lead sheets in concert key for the songs you will perform
•Guitarists and bassists bring your own cords; drummers bring cymbals, hi-hats, sticks, and brushes
•Amplifiers, a drum set, a piano, and a stereo system are provided
•Most auditions are 10-15 minutes in duration
Decisions
•March 19, 2027: SOMD issues admission decisions
•April 1, 2027 (approx): Scholarship offers emailed
•May 1, 2027: Enrollment deposit deadline and SOMD Admission Response form due
