Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Three contrasting solo works selected from the Baroque, Classic, Romantic, or 20th/21st-century repertoire

Perform from memory

Solo piano works must be from the standard repertoire — no original or unpublished compositions

Scales & Technique

Major and minor scales (harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios, four octaves ascending and descending, hands together

Video

Recorded auditions use the same repertoire in video format

Good to Know

Application Logistics

Two-step: apply to UO (Common App or UO website) and complete the separate SOMD online application

Both applications due by January 15, 2027

Recorded auditions due by January 29, 2027

Fall 2027 SOMD application opens August 1, 2026

Eligibility

Fall enrollment only for incoming students

Audition also qualifies applicants for SOMD performance scholarships

Must complete both UO and SOMD applications by January 15 (not the general February 15 transfer deadline)

What's The Process

Audition Expectations

In-person auditions strongly encouraged — recorded auditions accepted if in-person is not possible

Choose audition type (in-person or recorded) on the SOMD application

Auditions are 10-15 minutes in duration

Live auditions include sight-reading

If admitted on a recorded audition, a second short audition covering sight-reading and four-octave scales/arpeggios is held during Week of Welcome before fall classes begin

Pianists do not need to bring an instrument — a piano is provided

Decisions

March 19, 2027: SOMD issues admission decisions

April 1, 2027 (approx): Scholarship offers emailed

May 1, 2027: Enrollment deposit deadline and SOMD Admission Response form due

Scholarship Info

SOMD performance scholarships are awarded based on audition — most are automatically renewed for up to four years. Scholarship offers are emailed approximately April 1. No separate music scholarship application is required
