Audition Requirements
Optional audition for scholarship consideration — not required for program admission.
Dance
TECHNIQUE ASSESSMENT CLASS (placement only — not for admission)
•Instruction in four primary movement idioms: African, ballet, contemporary, and hip hop
•Approximately 30 minutes of instruction in each idiom
•Students are placed in levels according to skill
•Reviewed each term to ensure the most advantageous level
FOOTWEAR
•Soft slippers or thin cotton socks for ballet (no pointe shoes)
•Bare feet for contemporary and African
•Clean sneakers for hip hop
ATTIRE
•Wear clothing that allows free movement and showcases the artistry of your movement
Good to Know
APPLICATION PROCESS
•Two-step: apply to UO (Common App or UO website) AND complete the separate SOMD online application
•Both applications due by January 15, 2026 (Fall term)
ELIGIBILITY
•Current UO students eligible for admission during any term
•Winter 2026 application deadline: November 17, 2025
•Spring 2026 application deadline: February 23, 2026
•Placement audition strongly encouraged but not required for admission
TRANSFER APPLICANTS
•Must complete both UO and SOMD applications by January 15 (not the general Feb 15 transfer deadline)
•Late applications risk non-admission and are generally not considered for scholarships
What's The Process
PLACEMENT AUDITION
•Audition is for course placement only — not required for admission to the BA/BS Dance degree
•Strongly encouraged for all BA/BS Dance applicants
•Attend during a live audition date or during Week of Welcome (September) before fall term
•Incoming freshmen attending IntroDUCKtion in July should attend the spring term placement class
