Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Prepare one selection of the type used for state contest or solo and ensemble participation

•A movement from a sonata, concerto, or concert piece is acceptable

•Memorization is not required

•Bass, guitar, and set drummers may instead submit a recording demonstrating contemporary styles such as rock, swing, Latin, and other jazz styles, with twelve-bar blues improvisation included

•Recorded excerpts from jazz bands, combos, and worship teams may be included to demonstrate ensemble playing

Accompaniment

•An accompanist is provided for all areas except piano

•Mail or email sheet music to the department at least one week before the scheduled audition

•Schedule an audition during MTD Audition Visit Days or a personalized visit before March 15

•Admitted students take a music theory and aural-skills placement assessment for course placement only, not admission
