Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Perform two solos or etudes in contrasting style and tempo, or two contrasting movements of a sonata, concerto, or solo piece

Memorized pieces are encouraged

Prepare major scales commensurate with range capability; minor scales optional

Sight-read at the committee's discretion

A staff accompanist may be arranged for scheduled audition dates if needed; rehearsal time is limited

Transfer Pathway

Susquehanna transfer agreements may award 60-62 credits and junior status after an associate degree. BM Performance transfer applicants in Brass still audition in the primary area; completion timing depends on applied-music, ensemble, and major-credit alignment.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Step 1: Apply and be admitted to Susquehanna University

Step 2: Register for an audition via the River Hawk Portal

Step 3: Audition on campus (preferred) or submit a video audition followed by a virtual interview

Audition Expectations

Performance on your brass instrument: two contrasting solos or etudes, or two contrasting movements (memorization encouraged); major scales; sight-reading

Keyboard skills placement exam (play one piece, major and minor scales and arpeggios, sight-read a simple melody at the keyboard)

Musicianship assessment (sing a simple hymn, folk, or patriotic song; basic pitch and rhythmic reading; identify intervals and chord types)

Music theory test covering fundamentals (intervals, chord types, basic notation)

In-person auditions are preferred and afford the best scholarship consideration

Video auditions available for students unable to travel to campus, followed by a virtual interview
