Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Dance

On-Campus Audition

Two-hour technique class with modern and ballet components

One-minute self-choreographed solo in dance style of your choice

No costumes or tap shoes

Music can be played from a phone or iPod

Video Audition

Short verbal introduction stating why you want to study dance at SUNY Brockport and your career goals

WARMUP of your choice, no more than 4 minutes (ballet, jazz, lyrical, modern, African, etc.)

COMBINATION in style of your choice, no more than 4 minutes (modern, ballet, African, hip-hop, jazz, etc.)

Attire (on-Campus)

Form-fitted dancewear that allows faculty to see alignment

Ballet slippers for ballet segment

Bare feet for modern dance segment

Eligibility

Maximum of 42 credits may be transferred into the BFA

Transfer students may need an additional year to complete the BFA

Program Requirements

85 credits required in dance (rigorous professional preparation)

Grades of C or higher required in all dance credits

Gateway Program

Entering freshmen must complete at least one semester of BA/BS Dance before applying for the BFA

Transfer students may be reviewed for BFA acceptance during the department entrance audition

Transfer Pathway

Transfer students may be reviewed for direct BFA Dance acceptance during the departmental entrance audition; a maximum of 42 transfer credits may apply.

Audition Process

Students enter as BA/BS Dance majors and are eligible to apply to the BFA in the second semester

Transfer students can be reviewed for BFA acceptance during the departmental entrance audition

Audition Expectations

Auditions begin at 9 AM in Hartwell Hall

Report to Room 141 at least 45 minutes before start

Notification emails sent within two weeks

Department Audition (Required)

All students must first pass the dance department audition to enter as BA/BS Dance majors

On-campus or video audition options available

Audition application must be received at least one week prior to audition date
