•Must be in two different languages

Theory/musicianship placement exam (required)
•Tests competence in rudimentary music theory and ear-training
•Students who do not pass may take preparatory courses first year
-Successful completion permits entry to the major in second year

APPLICATION PROCESS
•Apply to Stony Brook University first via Common App or school website
•After receiving SBU ID number, apply to the Music Department via separate online form
•Department application includes YouTube links to recorded audition materials
ENROLLMENT
•Pre-approval is recommended but not required to major in music
•Current SBU students and transfer students may apply at start of any semester
•Fall enrollment for pre-approved students
AUDITION PROCESS
•Audition is recommended but not required for admission
•Submit YouTube links to two recorded performances with department application
•Alternatively, audition live during the first week of classes
•Contact the Music Department at (631) 632-7330 in mid-August to arrange live audition
SCHOLARSHIP TIMELINE
•Submit department application with audition materials by February 1
•Pre-approval decisions sent by approximately March 15

MUSIC DEPARTMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
•Four-year scholarships for students talented in performance, composition, or music history
•Some awards cover full tuition for four years
•Must apply by February 1 deadline for scholarship consideration
