Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Audition Video (Required)

Provide privately shared YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Drive links containing a brass audition video containing contrasting brass repertoire and standard orchestral excerpts

Portfolio / Creative Sample (Optional)

Compositions, audio engineering projects, scholarly essays, music reviews, or musicology/theory/history work may support scholarship consideration

Application Logistics

Apply to Stony Brook University first via Common App or the school website

After receiving an SBU ID number, submit the Department of Music application form

Applications submitted after the scholarship deadline may still be considered for admission, but not additional financial aid

Admission Pathway

First-year pre-approval is recommended but not required to major in music

Pre-approval is required for music scholarship consideration and performance-faculty consideration

Current SBU students and transfer students can complete audition and placement steps at the start of a semester

Program Requirements

Music majors take a theory/musicianship placement exam for major placement

Students who do not pass theory or musicianship may take preparatory coursework before entering the major sequence

Transfer Pathway

Transfer students may enter the BA Music pathway without first-year pre-approval and complete the department audition and placement steps at the beginning of a semester. The Undergraduate Studies Director coordinates the transfer pathway.

Audition Process

Submit privately shared links to recorded audition materials with the department form, or arrange a live audition during the first week of classes

Brass applicants audition in their particular instrumental or vocal area

The department application asks applicants to list pieces/movements and provide audition links

Audition Expectations

Applied-lesson study requires an audition in the applicant's area

All music majors have a performance requirement

Post-Enrollment

Students who are not pre-approved or who do not pass an entrance component may be advised into preparatory coursework before entering the major sequence

Decisions

Department pre-approval decisions are expected around March 15 after scholarship-deadline review
