Audition Requirements

Dance

Audition Class

•Participate in a technique class for BA, BFA, and Dance Minor auditionees

•Faculty look for efficient alignment, anatomically sound principles, musicality, and movement dynamics

•Audition class includes ballet and modern/contemporary components

Attire

•Wear leotard and tights or dance pants

•Bring ballet shoes for the ballet portion

•Use bare feet for the modern portion

BFA Solo

•Submit a link to a 1.5-2 minute solo during registration

•Solo may be choreographed or improvised

•Genre may include modern, African, ballet, jazz, tap, or another style of choice

Additional Materials

Essay

•Required essay: submit a two-page narrative defining dance as an art form, describing previous dance experiences, and discussing future goals

•Essay format: 12-point font, one-inch margins, double-spaced, in Microsoft Word

Headshot

•Optional: submit a dance photo or headshot during registration if desired

Video

•Required: BFA candidates submit a 90-120 second audition video link during registration

Application Logistics

•Register for a dance audition date on the Department of Dance audition page

•Applying to SRU before the audition is highly recommended, but not required before auditioning

•Students must be accepted by both the university and the Department of Dance to enter a dance major or minor

•Video audition may be arranged with the department chairperson if unable to attend in person

What's The Process

Audition Process

•Audition day includes information session, audition class, peer-to-peer session, and optional facilities tour

•BFA candidates complete a brief faculty audition-panel interview after the peer-to-peer session

•Audition decision is based on potential demonstrated in the audition

Scholarship Info

Dance Scholarships

•Incoming BA and BFA dance major auditionees accepted to the university are automatically considered for one-time incoming dance student scholarships

•Preference is given to candidates who audition and receive acceptance to both the university and dance program in the fall semester
