Training
•24-credit minor built on Music Theory and Musicianship I, Keyboard Skills I and II, Survey of African American Music, and History of Western Music, plus a required Music Elective
•Minors audition into the department and typically begin coursework by the fall of sophomore year
•Applied Music requires a minimum of four semesters of private lessons on a single instrument (strings, voice, piano, organ, wind/brass, or percussion) with six hours of weekly practice
Performance & Productions
•Four semesters of ensemble participation, chosen from Glee Club, Chamber Singers, Chamber Music, the Contemporary Popular Music Ensemble, or the AUC Orchestra
•Four semesters of weekly Music Seminar featuring student recitals, guest lectures, and workshops
•Minors complete a capstone Music Minors' Project developed collaboratively with their applied instructor
Facilities
•Spelman is the first HBCU designated an All-Steinway School; the department is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)
