Training
•Performance concentration builds toward six semesters of private lessons on a single instrument — voice, piano, strings, winds, brass, or percussion — alongside required group performance classes
•An applied jury evaluates the student's major medium each semester, except during a semester with a required recital
•Students who pass a Junior Recital (approximately 30 minutes) may continue private study toward a full Senior Recital of at least 50 minutes in the second semester of senior year
Performance & Productions
•Ensemble options include the AUC Orchestra, Spelman Chamber Players, Glee Club, Chamber Singers, and the Contemporary Popular Music Ensemble
•All music majors attend a weekly Music Seminar featuring student recitals, guest lectures, and workshops
Facilities
•Spelman is the first historically Black college or university designated an All-Steinway School
•Department of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM)
