Admission Pathway

Admitted students complete a keyboard proficiency requirement after enrollment — for course placement and degree progress, not admission

Students not admitted to the BM may enroll in the BA in Music or re-audition after starting at Southwestern

Program Requirements

Texas All-Level Music Certification is available through a separate application to the Teacher Education Program in the Education Department

Students may complete the degree with certification, or without certification and pursue an alternative certification program after graduation

State certification also requires a satisfactory score on the TExES examination

Transfer Pathway

• BM Music Education — Choral/Vocal emphasis without Certification: Transfer students apply through ApplyTexas or Common App; the published BM Music Education plan gives transfer students reduced recital-attendance requirements, and Music permits re-audition after enrollment for students pursuing the major.

What's The Process

Audition Process

An audition on the principal instrument or voice serves as both formal admission to the Bachelor of Music in Music Education and the Sarofim Scholarship audition

Choral/vocal-emphasis applicants prepare the voice requirements; instrumental-emphasis applicants prepare principal-instrument requirements

Materials are reviewed by Music faculty, who recommend admittance and an initial scholarship level

The initial audition is submitted by video; prepared repertoire is listed in the Submission Requirements card

Sarofim Scholarship in Music

Competitive scholarship awarded by audition or interview — serves as both admission and scholarship audition for Bachelor of Music applicants

Available for vocal, instrumental, and general music study

Performance Awards also available for non-majors who participate in departmental ensembles and applied lessons

Scholarship Celebration Day

March 1, 2026 on campus — invitation sent after an initial scholarship recommendation

Attend workshops, lectures, and meet faculty for a chance at additional scholarship funds

Renewal & Additional Aid

Awards are renewable annually for up to eight semesters

Recipients may also be eligible for academic scholarships and need-based aid
