Scholarship Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Optional audition for scholarship consideration only; it is not required for program admission.

Instrumental Repertoire List

•Woodwind, brass, and string applicants: prepare two works or excerpts of Grade 4-6 difficulty

•Choose repertoire that shows both lyrical and technical playing; selections do not need to be memorized

•Woodwind, brass, and string repertoire auditions include scales and sight-reading

•Percussion repertoire should include one work or excerpt for snare drum, timpani, and keyboard percussion (mallets)

•Percussion repertoire auditions include keyboard-percussion scales and sight-reading on any listed percussion instrument

•Prepared drum set repertoire may be included by applicants with interest and background

What's The Process

No Audition Required

•Admission is through the general university application

•No performance audition is required for program admission

Scholarship Audition

•Optional audition for music performance scholarship consideration

•Submit the Music Entrance Audition Application before scheduling an audition

•In-person auditions are offered at SBU on scheduled visit/event dates

•Students unable to travel may submit a recording and schedule a video conference for sight-reading

•Deadline for all auditions: May 1, 2026

Scholarship Info

Music Performance Scholarships

•Awarded based on scholarship audition; the audition is not required for admission

•Available in vocal, keyboard, and instrumental areas

•Awards are renewable annually

•Maintain a 2.5 minimum GPA in all coursework

•Music majors are given preference, especially for vocal scholarships

•Non-music majors may also audition for ensemble scholarships

Scholarship Types

•Choral and Instrumental Scholarships: participate in an assigned role in SBU ensembles

•Keyboard Scholarships: perform assigned accompanying duties for soloists and/or ensembles
