Training

The 2026-2027 Instrumental Performance concentration is a 120-credit Bachelor of Music plan built around applied music, recital hour, theory, aural skills, music history, and continuing ensemble participation.

Upper-level work includes a choice of percussion, brass, woodwind, or string pedagogy, materials, and laboratory study.

Performance & Productions

The curriculum includes both a junior recital and a senior recital. Ensemble options named in the catalog include orchestra, wind symphony, symphonic band, chamber ensemble, jazz ensemble, athletic bands, and the Southeastern Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

Woodwinds and brass: Prepare two solo movements or etudes of moderate difficulty in contrasting styles; ensemble music is not accepted.

Strings: Prepare about 20 minutes of music, including at least two contrasting pieces or movements.

Percussion: Prepare concert snare drum, timpani, and mallet solos or etudes; drum set and rudimental snare drum are optional.

Guitar: Non-classically trained applicants demonstrate chord and solo playing; classically trained applicants may prepare studies or pieces by Sor, Carcassi, Tarrega, or other composers.

Scales & Technique

Percussion: Demonstrate all major scales in two octaves and sight-reading.

Guitar: Demonstrate slurs, vibrato, two major scales in different two-octave positions or patterns, and fretboard knowledge; a brief sight-reading entry is optional for classical guitarists.

Application Logistics

Apply to Southeastern first.

After applying to the university, complete the Music Department application; faculty will then contact you to arrange an audition. The department describes that application as its audition, admission, and music-scholarship application.

Southeastern states that Fall 2027 audition information is coming soon. The current undergraduate music page publishes no Fall 2027 audition deadline, date, or active department application form.

What's The Process

Audition Process

Auditions are scheduled after the Music Department application is submitted.

Audition days are held on campus while classes are in session, with time to attend a rehearsal or music class and meet faculty and students.

If a published date does not work, the department asks applicants to submit the application so faculty can discuss another arrangement.

The department currently says Fall 2027 audition information is coming soon and publishes no Fall 2027 audition date or deadline.

Audition Expectations

Instrumental requirements vary by woodwind/brass, strings, percussion, and guitar; see the Submission Requirements card for the current published preparation details.

Audition day includes a 15-minute audition and interview, with time for questions, campus tours, and scholarship information.
