Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Repertoire

•Select one to two soloistic pieces that best represent you as a musician

•Vocalists: prepare a vocal solo you are comfortable singing; solo and ensemble contest repertoire is encouraged

•Vocalists: foreign language repertoire is not required, and musical theatre repertoire is welcome

•Wind, brass, string, and percussion applicants: prepare a work that best exhibits musicianship, such as a contest solo, etude, or other appropriate selection

•Pianists: prepare one standard classical repertoire piece; performing by memory is preferred but not required

•Pianists: be ready to demonstrate technique with a scale and arpeggio

•Required; include music performance experience and background

References

•Required as part of the music scholarship audition application

•Required education information includes school, GPA, and test scores

Accompaniment Music

•Email accompaniment music to Sam Gowen two weeks before the audition if requesting an SDState accompanist

•Instrumentalists are not required to bring or request an accompanist

Application Logistics

•Apply to SDSU via the university application portal

•Complete the Music Scholarship Audition Application on the SDSU website when the form is open

•SDSU notes the form may be closed between audition cycles and will reopen for scholarship applications

Eligibility

•Entering freshmen and transfer students planning to participate in a music ensemble are encouraged to audition

•All students entering SDSU with the intention of pursuing music as a major must perform an audition

•Students may audition for both music and theatre/dance scholarships separately

What's The Process

Audition Process

•All students entering SDSU with the intention of pursuing music as a major must perform an audition

•Auditions are conducted by members of the Music Scholarship Committee

•Both in-person and online/recorded auditions are available

•Complete any recording before filling out the scholarship audition application

Audition Expectations

•Live auditions are scheduled in 10-minute increments

•Prepare at least five minutes of audition material for a live audition

•Recorded auditions must be at least five minutes and no more than 10 minutes

•Applicants may audition in up to three different interests, including vocal and instrumental areas

•Students interested in jazz may present an additional performance demonstrating jazz skills or improvisation

•Vocalists auditioning in person are encouraged to bring their own accompanist

•SDState may provide an accompanist if needed; priority goes to vocal auditions

•Instrumentalists are not required to bring or request an accompanist

Decisions

•Scholarship results are sent in writing within one month of the audition
