Audition Requirements

Songs

VOCAL SOLO PERFORMANCE, 5-10 min

•Prepare a vocal solo you are comfortable singing

•Select one to two pieces that best represent you as a musician

•Repertoire should be soloistic in nature, not from an ensemble piece

REPERTOIRE

•Musical theatre repertoire is welcome

•A song performed at solo and ensemble contest is encouraged

•Foreign language repertoire is not required

•Provide references as part of the audition application

•School, GPA, and test scores

Accompaniment music (in-person vocal auditions)

•Bring own accompaniment music or request SDSU accompanist

APPLICATION LOGISTICS

•Apply to SDSU via the university application portal

•Complete the Music Scholarship Audition Application form on the SDSU website

ELIGIBILITY

•Open to entering freshmen and transfer students

•Any student planning to participate in a music ensemble is encouraged to audition

•May audition for both vocal and instrumental scholarships

•May also audition for theatre and dance scholarships separately

What's The Process

AUDITION PROCESS

•All students pursuing music as a major must perform an audition

•Audition serves both program admission and scholarship consideration

•Recording must be 5-10 minutes in length

•Complete recording before filling out the application form

•Deadline: 5 PM on Monday, March 2, 2026

AUDITION EXPECTATIONS

•Scheduled in 10-minute increments

•Prepare at least 5 minutes of audition material

•Accompanist provided by SDSU (priority given to vocal auditions)

•Email accompaniment to samantha.gowen@sdstate.edu two weeks prior if requesting SDSU accompanist

DECISIONS

•Notified in writing within one month of audition

•May audition for multiple interest areas (vocal + instrumental)
