Audition Requirements

Repertoire

Two contrasting etudes — one technical, one lyrical

Keyboard applicants prepare two contrasting etudes from the serious keyboard literature

Percussionists prepare a concert snare drum solo or etude, a keyboard (2-mallet) solo or etude, and rudiments — paradiddle, alternating flams, flam taps, and multiple-bounce roll — demonstrated in a slow-fast-slow manner

For top scholarship consideration, a 4-mallet solo or etude is highly recommended

Scales & Technique

Prepare 2-3 major scales (two octaves preferred) and a chromatic scale (two-octave minimum, three if possible on your instrument)

Accompaniment

An accompanist is provided — no pre-recorded accompaniments or self-accompaniment accepted

Application Logistics

Students must be admitted to the University of South Alabama before submitting the music audition application

For priority scholarship consideration, auditions should be completed by April 3, 2027

An accompanist is provided; pre-recorded accompaniment and self-accompaniment are not accepted

Admission Pathway

Admitted students take a music theory placement examination only if transferring in prior theory credit; it is for course placement, not admission

Program Requirements

Includes Alabama Class B Teacher Certification in Music for grades K-12

Certification requires teacher candidacy, a passing PRAXIS Music: Content Knowledge score, and a final-semester student teaching internship; these are post-enrollment milestones, not admission

Audition Process

Step 1: Apply to and be admitted by the University of South Alabama before your audition date

Step 2: Submit the Music Audition Application via the department’s Google Form to reserve an audition date and time

Saturday, February 6, 2027

February 18–20, 2027 (Concert Honor Band Participants Only)

Saturday, March 20, 2027

Saturday, April 3, 2027 (priority scholarship deadline)

Percussion applicants complete a brief interview with percussion faculty after the playing portion

Audition Expectations

In-person auditions are held on campus and evaluated by applied faculty in the instrumental area

Video submissions are considered only for candidates unable to come to campus because of extreme distance or comparable extenuating circumstances

All saxophone auditions are performed on alto saxophone

Contact the applied faculty member for repertoire selection recommendations

Scholarship Info

Departmental Scholarships

Scholarships range from $350 to $2,000 per semester for voice, keyboard, and instrumental areas

Require audition and are renewable with 2.75+ GPA, 15 credit hours, and ensemble participation

Must complete 30 earned credit hours per year to renew

Named Awards

John W. Laidlaw Scholar Awards: $2,500-$5,500 annually for outstanding students across all music areas (3.0+ GPA required)

John W. Laidlaw Endowed Scholarship in Music: $750-$2,000/year for music majors (3.0+ GPA, audition-based)

Harper Endowed Scholarship in Music: $500-$1,000/year for incoming freshmen or upper-level music majors

Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award: tuition scholarship for a rising senior music major

Eligibility

Both music majors and non-majors are eligible for departmental scholarships pending a successful audition

Priority scholarship consideration for auditions completed by April 4, 2026
