Composition
Program snapshot
Composition majors combine weekly private composition study with applied instruction on an instrument or voice. The curriculum moves through music theory, orchestration, audio and recording technology, and composition seminar work, giving students repeated opportunities to write, revise, hear, and discuss original music in both acoustic and technology-supported settings.
The degree culminates in a substantial senior composition project. Students can also submit orchestral work to the department's composition competition, which offers the possibility of rehearsal and performance by a university ensemble. Admission mirrors the program's dual focus: applicants audition on an instrument or voice and submit one or two original works as scores or audio.
