Training
•Bullet: Ten semester courses plus four performance credits
•Bullet: Foundational theory and musicianship coursework is followed by electives spanning composition and digital music, ethnomusicology and world music, musicology and music history, popular and vernacular music, and theory and analysis — with at least one course required in three of these five areas
•Bullet: Senior capstone (MUS 325) is normally taken in the senior year
•Bullet: Performance credit may be earned through lessons on an instrument or in voice, conducting, or ensemble participation
Facilities
•Bullet: Sage Hall houses the department’s concert hall, an intimate recital hall, a digital classroom with electronic pianos, an electroacoustic studio, an early-music room, and numerous practice rooms with grand pianos
•Bullet: Sweeney Concert Hall seats more than 600 and Earle Recital Hall seats up to 120 for smaller performances
Degree Flexibility
•Bullet: Department-approved Five College and study-abroad courses may count toward the major on a case-by-case basis
•Bullet: Majors may substitute one Special Studies course for one of the six electives with departmental approval
