Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Scales & Technique

Horn: a two-octave chromatic scale in G or F

Other brass: technical facility is demonstrated through the prepared selections and etudes

Repertoire List

Two selections or movements that contrast in tempo and style, one of which may be a representative etude

Trombone and euphonium prepare a Rochut melodious etude plus a slow and a fast movement

Tuba prepares standard solo literature (e.g. Bach-Bell, Beethoven-Bell, Hartley)

Repertoire list: suggested concerto and solo literature is published per instrument (horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba)

Prepare approximately 10 minutes of music; entire pieces are not required

Accompaniment

Accompaniment: a staff pianist is provided for the audition

Bring sheet music for every selection

Application Logistics

Apply to SJSU through Cal State Apply before the university deadline

The School of Music contacts applicants in late December or early January about audition scheduling

Admitted music majors take an online music theory and aural-skills placement exam before classes begin — for course placement only, not admission

Contact the brass faculty in advance if unsure what to prepare

Transfer Pathway

Brass transfer students audition through the School of Music for applied performance-level placement, with possible placement from freshman through senior standing. Music theory and musicianship placement may also depend on articulation plus the SJSU placement exam.

Audition Process

A successful School of Music audition is required for admission to the BM Music Performance brass track

On-campus auditions are recommended when possible; video submission is accepted by the published deadline

Other audition times may be arranged individually through musicrecruitment@sjsu.edu or 408-924-4673

Auditionees prepare roughly 10 to 30 minutes of music across their selections

Ensemble placement auditions are separate from entrance auditions and occur before classes begin

Music Scholarships

Any student who auditions for the School of Music and Dance is automatically considered for a scholarship

The school provides more than $400,000 in scholarship assistance each year

Undergraduate awards range from small awards to full tuition

Recipients must demonstrate financial need, strong musical ability, high academic achievement, and maintain a 3.0 GPA
