Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Songs

Two to Three Contrasting Songs

•Prepare two to three songs in contrasting styles

•One selection must be in a language other than English

•Transfer applicants should prepare three songs

•Perform all selections from memory

Accompaniment

•A pianist is provided

•Bring sheet music for every selection

Application Logistics

•Apply to SJSU through Cal State Apply before the university deadline

•The School of Music contacts applicants in late December or early January about audition scheduling

•Admitted students take music theory and aural-skills placement testing for course placement only, not admission

•The BM prepares students for the California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music for kindergarten through high school

Transfer Pathway

Choral Music Education transfer students audition on voice for admission and applied-level placement; prior theory study is reviewed through articulation and placement testing.

What's The Process

Audition Process

•A successful School of Music audition on the principal instrument or voice is required for admission

•On-campus auditions are recommended when possible; video audition submissions are accepted when the next cycle opens

•Other audition times may be arranged individually through musicrecruitment@sjsu.edu or 408-924-4673

•Ensemble placement auditions after admission are separate from the entrance audition

•All School of Music auditionees are automatically considered for music merit scholarships
