Admission Process
•Admission to the BM in Composition is based on a portfolio review of original works plus an audition on the primary instrument or voice
•Submit the composition portfolio directly to the Composition Area Coordinator and complete the School of Music entrance audition
•On-campus audition dates for Fall 2026 entry are February 14 and February 28, 2026
•Southern California off-campus audition date is February 21, 2026
•Video audition submission deadline is February 7, 2026
•Other audition times may be arranged individually through musicrecruitment@sjsu.edu or 408-924-4673
Primary-Instrument Audition
•Composition applicants audition on their primary instrument or voice following the suggested audition literature for that instrument or voice
•A staff pianist is provided for instrumental and vocal auditions; bring sheet music for every selection
•Lower-division composition majors enroll in applied lessons on their primary instrument or voice plus applied composition lessons
