Permanent faculty include Erika Latta (MFA Acting, Columbia University), James Long (Master of Urban Studies, SFU; Performance Area Coordinator), and Dr. Ryan Tacata (PhD Performance Studies, Stanford University), all active in international touring and scholarly research

Training

Studio curriculum runs through eight core groupings — Live Acts (CA 151/152/251/252), Body (CA 254/255), Environments (CA 256/356), Social (CA 354/355), Context (CA 257W/357W), Co-Lab (CA 253), and Performance as Research (CA 350/450)

Fourth-year students develop a Capstone Project (CA 451/452) mentored by core faculty, culminating in a publicly performed work

Capstone work is presented in a public festival setting attended by creative leaders from across Vancouver

The student-run Live Acts Festival stages 12 programs across 30 shows over two weeks each March/April in the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre and Assembly Space

Home venue is the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, one of Vancouver's largest black-box spaces, with a retractable guillotine door that doubles as a proscenium arch, inside the SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts at 149 W. Hastings St.

Audition Requirements

These requirements are from the Fall 2026 entry cycle. Fall 2027 requirements are typically posted between August and October and usually change only slightly — confirm on the official source before submitting.

Monologues

Original Performance Piece

Prepare one original piece of performance, 1-2 minutes, that includes text

The piece may be a found or written monologue, spoken word, song, or another text-based performance

Music and movement may be included

For live auditions, bring three copies of any text used

Additional Materials

Questionnaire

Upload one PDF with personal information, education background, and the selected work-sharing option

Write the selected live audition date in the questionnaire PDF if choosing a live audition

Video

Prepare one video file with personal information and the 1-2 minute performance piece

State full name, SFU student number or application number, age, and current location at the beginning

Post the video to YouTube or Vimeo and include any private-link password

Portfolio

Submit a PDF of 5-8 original artworks or pieces representing creativity

Portfolio PDF must include a 75-100 word description alongside each work

Application Portal

Apply to SFU first, then use the SCA supplemental application after receiving the SFU reference number

The SCA form has Part 1 for applicant details and Part 2 for questionnaire upload

Program Entry

Fall entry is cohort-based

Applicants may show work through a live audition, video audition, or creative portfolio

Transfer Pathway

SFU's SCA has a named Block Transfer Agreement with Langara College's Studio 58 Acting program: graduates transfer 60 credits and are admitted directly into the third year of the BFA, completing the degree (including the fourth-year Capstone) in 4 semesters (16 months). Admission requires a 2.6 cumulative GPA plus a written application and interview each January.

What's The Process

Application Process

Apply to SFU through EducationPlannerBC before submitting the SCA supplemental application

Submit the SCA Part 1 form, then upload the Theatre & Performance questionnaire in Part 2

Applicants choose one way to show their work: live audition, video audition, or creative portfolio

Live Audition

Live auditions are held at SCA in Vancouver, with questionnaire deadlines tied to the selected audition date

Prepare one original 1-2 minute performance piece that includes text

The second part of the audition process is a group setting with other auditioners

A short faculty interview may take place at the end of the day

Video or Portfolio Option

Video audition and creative portfolio applicants may be contacted for a short Zoom interview

Video auditions and creative portfolios are not accepted after April 22, 2026
