Audition Requirements

Dance

Live Audition

Participate in a technique class combining ballet barre, contemporary dance technique, and short improvisation

Complete a small-group interview about dance experience, interest in SCA, and interdisciplinary practice

Video Audition

Submit a 5-10 minute audition video if distance or circumstances prevent attending live

Include an introduction and current excerpts from technique class or movement practice

Optional material may include improvisation or a recent performance or dance work

Upload one PDF with personal information and numbered written responses

Note your selected live audition date, or share your video audition link, under Question 6 of the questionnaire

Video

Post the video to YouTube, Vimeo, or another shareable platform

Include any private link password in the questionnaire submission

Program Pathway

Students initiate studies at SFU or the National Ballet School

Consult SCA advising early because this is a combined degree/diploma pathway

Transfer Pathway

SFU publishes a specific NBS/SFU pathway: SFU-first students spend three years at SFU and two years at NBS for the BFA plus NBS diploma. NBS-first students can transfer to SFU after three NBS study years, but SFU notes that route leads to a BGS plus NBS Teachers' Training diploma.

Audition Process

Apply to SFU through EducationPlannerBC before submitting the SCA supplemental application

Submit the Dance questionnaire and supporting documents as one PDF through the SCA Upload Your Application Documents form (Part 1 of the SCA supplemental application); the audition is Part 2

Note your selected live audition date, or share your video audition link, under Question 6 of the questionnaire

Audition Expectations

Live auditions are scheduled at SCA in Vancouver on February 19 and April 23, 2027

Questionnaire deadline February 7 for the February 19 audition (high school applicants, mature students, and post-secondary transfer applicants)

Questionnaire deadline April 22 for the April 23 audition, which is for post-secondary transfer applicants only

Current SFU students applying for internal transfer may attend either audition date but are encouraged to attend on February 19

Local candidates are required to attend a live in-person audition

The live audition includes a technique class and small-group interview with Dance faculty

Applicants outside the province may submit a video audition when circumstances prevent live attendance

Video auditionees may be contacted for a Zoom interview
